Indian-Origin Teen Charged with Killing Mother and Brother After ChatGPT Searches on Family Violence

A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager has been charged with the murders of his mother and younger brother at their home in Acton, Massachusetts. Arjun Aravind, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, was arrested early Wednesday following an overnight search.

Authorities allege that Aravind fatally assaulted his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddarth Aravind, inside the family’s Martha Lane residence on Tuesday. He then fled the scene in his mother’s Honda Accord.

The bodies were discovered after a tutor arrived for a scheduled appointment just after 6:30 pm and was unable to enter the house. She contacted Aravind’s father, who had last seen his wife early that morning before leaving for work and his younger son around noon. The father then requested a well-being check from Acton police.

When officers arrived, they found Venkatesan in the basement and Siddarth on the first floor of the home. Both showed obvious signs of trauma. The exact cause and manner of death, along with any weapon involved, remain under investigation by the chief medical examiner’s office.

Aravind and the vehicle were reported missing. After an initial search proved unsuccessful, authorities issued alerts. Early Wednesday, police in nearby Wayland responded to an unrelated alarm at a parking lot and located the Honda Accord with Aravind inside. He was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators stated that Aravind had recently displayed concerning behaviour. This included using the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family. He also asked the AI tool to help create Gothic novel-style stories, posing questions and developing characters related to such scenarios.

Aravind faces two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, unauthorised use of a vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle. He was expected to appear in Lowell Juvenile Court for certain charges, with the murder counts to be handled in Concord District Court due to jurisdictional rules.
