‘All US Bases in the Region Must Shut Down Or Be Targeted’: Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Issues First Statement

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, broke his public silence with a statement broadcast on state television, calling on the Iranian people to unite and warning that the country’s military campaign is far from over.

Khamenei said the Strait of Hormuz should remain closed as a pressure tool against Iran’s adversaries. He went further, demanding the immediate shutdown of all US military bases in the region and warning that those facilities would be struck if they remained operational.

Despite the belligerent tone, he was careful to draw a distinction between Iran’s enemies and its neighbours. Tehran, he said, has no intention of damaging ties with countries in the region, even though he acknowledged that some US bases from which attacks were launched against Iran are located on their soil. Iran’s retaliation, he stressed, would be directed at those bases specifically, not the host nations.

He also vowed that Iran would not stop short of avenging the deaths of what he described as its “martyrs.”

In a post on a newly created X account, Khamenei addressed the Iranian people directly. He described assuming the position of Supreme Leader as a weighty responsibility, given that it was previously held by two figures he called great leaders. He said witnessing the aftermath of the previous leader’s death was like seeing “a mountain of steadfastness.” He credited the Iranian public with steering the country through the crisis, saying their presence and resolve had left allies impressed and enemies caught off guard. He also called on citizens to participate in upcoming Quds Day events.
