Air India Pilot Detained in Vancouver Over Suspected Alcohol Consumption, Causing Flight Delay
Vancouver/New Delhi: Canadian authorities detained an Air India pilot at Vancouver International Airport on December 23, 2025, after concerns were raised about his fitness to operate a Delhi-bound flight, resulting in a significant departure delay.
The incident occurred shortly before the scheduled takeoff of Flight AI186, a Boeing 777 service routed via Vienna. A staff member at the airport’s duty-free shop alerted officials, reportedly after either detecting the smell of alcohol on the pilot during a purchase or observing him consume it. Canadian authorities administered a breath analyser test, which the pilot failed, leading to his immediate detention for further inquiry.
Air India confirmed that one cockpit crew member was offloaded prior to departure following questions from local officials about the pilot’s fitness for duty. An alternate pilot was promptly arranged, allowing the flight to depart after a delay.

In a statement, the airline expressed regret for the inconvenience to passengers and affirmed full cooperation with Canadian authorities. The pilot has been removed from flying duties pending the investigation’s outcome. Air India emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for any breach of rules and regulations, stating that confirmed violations would result in strict disciplinary measures. The carrier underscored that safety is its top priority.
The matter has also been reported to India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for review.
Separately, the DGCA recently issued a show-cause notice to Air India crew members involved in operating flights between Delhi and Tokyo amid identified compliance issues, requiring an explanation within two weeks.
