Air India Grounds New York And Newark Flights Amid Approaching ‘Super Bomb’ Winter Storm

New Delhi : Air India has cancelled all its flights to and from New York and Newark in the United States scheduled for Monday, February 23, in response to predictions of a severe winter storm accompanied by heavy snowfall.

The airline issued a statement explaining that the storm is expected to affect New York, New Jersey, and surrounding areas on the US East Coast over February 22 and 23. This weather event is anticipated to severely disrupt flight operations. Prioritising the safety, well-being, and convenience of passengers and crew, Air India decided to suspend all services on the affected date. The carrier assured that its teams are providing full support to those booked on these flights.

The decision aligns with broader preparations across the region, where a powerful winter storm has prompted blizzard warnings for approximately 30 million people in the Northeast. Forecasters have described the system as a “super bomb,” with rapid intensification expected. Heavy, wet snow accompanied by strong winds could lead to accumulations of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 61 cm) in many locations, making travel extremely difficult and raising risks of power outages and flooding in parts of New York and New Jersey.

Blizzard warnings cover New York City and Long Island, Boston, as well as coastal zones in New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. More than 1,000 flights have already faced cancellations due to the approaching conditions.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents during a Saturday press conference to remain indoors and avoid roads, warning that the storm could present greater hazards than a previous one in late January.
