6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Japan’s Hokkaido, No Tsunami Warning Issued

On Saturday, a powerful earthquake of magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Kushiro, located in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, at 2:07 PM local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The agency reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers. So far, no tsunami warning has been issued.
A series of tremors followed, beginning with a magnitude 4.4 aftershock in the same region at 2:19 PM. Later, at 4:45 PM, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Shikoku, followed by a 4.7 magnitude quake near Kushiro at 5:07 PM.
Authorities have stated that there are no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage, but they continue to closely monitor the situation. This seismic activity comes just weeks after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Japan’s Kyushu region in April 2025, at 7:34 PM IST, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
