Zomato is known for its marketing and informal social media style. They usually pick up the trend in the market and create buzz by making their own signature. But unfortunately, this time it’s not Zomato but someone else who took a dig at the Biryani controversy in the name of Zomato which turned out to be a huge bizarre.
As the controversy regarding Rs 370 ki Biryani is doing rounds on social media, someone circulated a fake zomato notification on social media that read, “Biryani Bhejdu? Rs 370 ki hai bas.”
Suddenly a wave of netizens started targeting zomato for this marketing. Some users said, “How is this funny to you? @ zomato. Zomato think such an insensitive topic is another brand promotion of theirs? Seriously? Are we stopping to this level to find this funny or we are insensitive enough to not care about it !! – @SudeepSonawane June 8, 2026.
Calling it fake, Zomato issued an important clarification through its official social media handle stating , ” Biryani is dinner, not consent. The screenshot of the distasteful notification you may have seen with our name is fake. We did not write or send it.”
While some aware of the situation took sides of zomato, the rest shared their views on the controversy.
One wrote,”Say it louder for the people at the back.” Another said, ” You can’t put a price on consent.”
” Being a regular zomato user, I didn’t get any such notifications, so it’s definitely fake,” a user said.
For those who don’t know what the controversy is all about, it stemmed from a viral video clip from comedian Pranit More’s show which received heavy backlash.
In the clip, a 22 year old person named Himanshu Jangra spoke about dating experience and implied that because he spent Rs 370 on a chicken biryani during a date it entitled him to do “vasuli”- a remark widely understood as a reference to physical intimacy for the spending on food. The video was later deleted and the comedian did give out an apology. Amid mounting backlash, Jangra’s employer Starvik Design, terminated him from the job.
As the controversy is getting viral, many social media users, including entertainment celebs, influencers, weighed in on the incident, criticising Jangra, More and what they described as the normalisation of objectification of women.
