In a distressing river mishap in Uttar Pradesh, six individuals are missing after a boat carrying nine people submerged in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur district on Wednesday. Three passengers were rescued promptly, while search and rescue operations continue.
District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal confirmed the details, stating that the boat was returning from Ghatampur when the incident occurred. Local villagers and police quickly responded to the scene upon receiving reports of the submergence.
“A boat carrying nine people from Ghatampur submerged in the Yamuna River. Three people were rescued immediately, while six remain missing. Rescue teams, including SDRF, NDRF, and flood relief units, have been called in. SDRF teams have already reached the spot, while other teams are on the way. The rescue operation is ongoing,” Goyal said.
According to the District Magistrate, the group had been on a routine trip that faced delays. The surviving boatman reported that the vessel did not capsize but submerged gradually. Those who could swim reached safety, while efforts to locate the others persist. Operations are set to continue through the night.

BJP MLA Manoj Prajapati noted that the missing include five children, aged between 5 and 15 years, and one woman. He assured that the administration remains fully alert, with three SDRF teams already deployed. The government will follow due procedures and share a complete report with the Chief Minister.
DIG Banda Division Rajesh Yash provided further confirmation: nine people were aboard the boat. Three swam to safety, while the six missing comprise one woman and five children in the 5-15 age group. SDRF and flood relief teams, supported by district administration and police, are actively engaged at the site.
This incident draws parallels to a recent tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district, where a cruise boat capsized in the Bargi Dam waters on April 30, resulting in 13 deaths. In that case, search operations concluded after recovering additional bodies, with 29 people rescued. The boat was operated by the state tourism department.
Authorities in Hamirpur continue intensive efforts to trace the missing as families await updates amid the ongoing operation.
