Wife and Lover Hired Hitman for ₹1 Lakh to Murder Husband Over Money and Resentment in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: Police in Madhya Pradesh have uncovered a calculated murder conspiracy in Dhar district, where a woman and her lover allegedly arranged the killing of her husband for a payment of ₹1 lakh to eliminate him and seize control of his finances.

The incident occurred on the night of April 7, when 28-year-old spice trader Purohit Devkrishna was found dead in his home from injuries caused by a sharp-edged weapon. His wife, 25-year-old Priyanka Purohit, initially reported to authorities that unknown robbers had broken into the house, stolen valuables worth ₹3.5 lakh, and murdered her husband after he tried to resist.

Investigations soon revealed a different picture. According to police, Priyanka had been involved in an extramarital relationship with 32-year-old Kamlesh Purohit from Rajgarh. The couple viewed Devkrishna as an obstacle and devised a plan to have him killed, with the motive tied to financial gain and personal animosity.

Kamlesh reportedly enlisted his associate Surendra Bhati and agreed to pay ₹1 lakh for the contract killing, handing over ₹50,000 as an advance. On the night of the crime, the house door was left unlocked deliberately. Surendra entered and attacked Devkrishna while he was asleep. To disguise the murder as a robbery, the room was ransacked, and valuables were reported missing. Priyanka staged herself as a victim, claiming she had been tied up and raising an alarm only after the assailant fled.

The fabricated story began to fall apart during questioning. Priyanka’s statements were inconsistent, and a search of the premises recovered the jewellery she had claimed was stolen. Mobile phone records and call data linked her to Kamlesh around the time of the murder. Under prolonged interrogation, she confessed to the plot.

Police have arrested Priyanka Purohit and Kamlesh Purohit. The alleged hitman, Surendra Bhati, is still at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him. Forensic examinations are also being conducted to check if any intoxicant was administered prior to the attack.

Family members of the victim described years of marital strain. Devkrishna’s sister, Jyoti, told investigators that Priyanka frequently humiliated her brother, taunting him with remarks such as “Tum kaale ho… you don’t deserve me… I deserve someone better.” She alleged that Priyanka often stayed on her phone, avoided household duties, and tried to isolate Devkrishna from his mother.

Devkrishna’s mother, Kheanchi Bai, has demanded the death penalty for all those involved, stating, “All the accused must be sentenced to death. I want nothing else but only justice.”

The case, initially presented as a botched robbery, has now been established as a premeditated murder driven by an illicit affair and the prospect of monetary benefit from the victim’s assets.
