Husband’s Abortion Claim and ₹7 Lakh Payment Emerge as Key Details in Twisha Sharma Dowry Death

In a significant development in the Twisha Sharma dowry death case, the Madhya Pradesh police Special Investigation Team (SIT) questioned her husband, Samarth Singh, for more than three hours before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed control of the probe on Monday.

Twisha Sharma, a former model and Miss Pune title holder originally from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. While her in-laws and initial autopsy findings pointed to suicide by hanging, her family has alleged foul play and demanded a thorough investigation.

According to sources within the Madhya Pradesh police cited, the SIT carried out an extensive recreation of the crime scene that lasted over two hours. This followed the prolonged interrogation of Samarth Singh. During questioning, he told investigators that Twisha had become deeply distressed after undergoing an abortion. In earlier statements, he had claimed that their relationship deteriorated once Twisha learned of her pregnancy, news agency PTI reported, quoting sources.

Samarth reportedly attempted to mislead investigators when asked about his period of absconding. He also repeated his assertion that he had given ₹7 lakh to Twisha. The SIT seized his laptop, mobile phone, passport, Aadhaar card, and several other important documents as part of the evidence collection.

The CBI formally took over the case on Monday after registering its own FIR, following directions from the Supreme Court. The agency has named Samarth Singh and his mother, former district judge Giribala Singh, as accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including those related to dowry, along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The original FIR filed by Bhopal police on May 15 alleged that Twisha was subjected to mental torture and domestic violence by her in-laws, who were dissatisfied with the dowry given at the time of the couple’s marriage on December 9, 2025. Her family claimed that on the night of her death, Twisha spoke to her mother at 9:41 pm, during which Samarth was heard shouting before the call ended abruptly. Giribala Singh later informed the family that Twisha was “no more.”

The post-mortem examination revealed death due to antemortem hanging by ligature, along with multiple antemortem injuries. A second autopsy by a team from AIIMS Delhi is still awaited.

Hearing the matter, a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized the need for a fair, independent, and impartial investigation. The court urged both the victim’s family and the accused to refrain from making public statements and instead record their versions before the investigating agency.
