Kolkata: A crucial meeting called by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on Sunday saw a surprisingly poor turnout, with nearly 60 party MLAs staying away. The development came just a day after TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a political programme in South 24 Parganas.
The meeting, attended by only around 20 legislators, was expected to review the party’s strategy in the wake of recent political developments and rising tensions in the state. However, the large number of absentees forced the party leadership to put off detailed discussions.
TMC leaders maintained that the absence of several MLAs should not be viewed as a sign of dissent. According to party sources, many legislators were busy participating in protests and organisational activities launched after the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee.
The incident involving Abhishek has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP, with both sides trading accusations over the violence. The ruling party has described the attack as a deliberate attempt to intimidate its leadership, while the BJP has denied the allegations.
The low attendance at Mamata Banerjee’s meeting, however, has sparked political chatter at a time when the TMC is trying to consolidate its ranks and strengthen its organisation. Opposition parties have seized on the development, claiming it reflects unease within the ruling camp, a charge dismissed by TMC leaders.
With political temperatures rising across West Bengal, the party is expected to intensify its outreach and protest programmes in the coming days as it seeks to rally workers and present a united front.
