Do You Know Which City Is Known As The “Gold Capital Of India” ?

Thrissur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging citizens to avoid unnecessary gold purchases has once again sparked discussions around India’s strong cultural and economic relationship with gold. Amid the debate, attention has turned toward Kerala’s Thrissur district, a city widely recognised for its massive influence in the country’s gold and jewellery industry. According to a report published by Live Hindustan, Thrissur is often referred to as the “Gold Capital of India.”

Located in the southern state of Kerala, Thrissur has emerged as one of the country’s largest hubs for gold trading and jewellery manufacturing. The city is home to several major jewellery businesses and thousands of artisans associated with the industry. Reports and studies have consistently highlighted the district’s dominance in gold ornament production, with a significant portion of Kerala’s jewellery manufacturing linked to Thrissur.

The city’s association with gold extends beyond retail jewellery shops. Thrissur also plays a major role in wholesale gold trading, ornament designing and distribution networks across southern India. Over the years, several prominent jewellery brands have either originated from or expanded operations through the district. The region’s economy has developed strong ties with banking, bullion trade and jewellery craftsmanship.

Thrissur’s reputation has further grown due to its long-standing entrepreneurial culture and commercial activity. Apart from its gold market, the city is also recognised as Kerala’s cultural capital because of its festivals, temples and traditional heritage.

The Live Hindustan report noted that despite changing economic conditions and fluctuating gold prices, the demand for gold in India continues to remain emotionally and culturally significant, especially during weddings, festivals and family celebrations. Thrissur’s continued prominence in the sector reflects India’s enduring fascination with the precious metal.
