Monsoon Advances into Telangana, Deepens Grip on Northeast India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced significant progress of the southwest monsoon on June 8, 2026, with rains advancing into parts of Telangana and further consolidating their hold over northeastern states. This development brings welcome relief to rain-fed agricultural regions after a slightly delayed onset over Kerala on June 4.

According to the IMD, the monsoon has now entered some parts of Telangana amid conditions favourable for further advancement into the state in the coming days. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) reflects this steady push, covering key areas in the southern peninsula. In Telangana, districts such as Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanumakonda, and Nagarkurnool have already witnessed heavy rainfall alerts, with light to moderate showers and thunderstorms expected across many places. This arrival is critical for the state, where agriculture employs a large portion of the population and depends heavily on monsoon rains for kharif sowing of crops like rice, cotton, and maize.

Simultaneously, the monsoon has strengthened its presence in North Eastern India. On June 7, it covered entire Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, along with parts of Tripura, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. The IMD forecasts continued advancement into remaining parts of the northeastern states, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim over the next few days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is likely across the region in the coming week, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

This progress is vital for the Northeast, a region known for its biodiversity and tea plantations, where timely rains replenish water resources and support rural livelihoods. However, the IMD has cautioned about potential risks from intense downpours, including localized flooding and landslides in hilly terrains.

The broader 2026 monsoon outlook remains cautious, with IMD projecting below-normal seasonal rainfall (around 92% of Long Period Average) for the country as a whole. While Northeast India and some pockets may see near-normal rains, southern and central regions could face deficits. Farmers are advised to monitor local forecasts closely and adopt resilient practices.

As the monsoon marches northward, it promises respite from the scorching summer heat but also demands preparedness for variable weather patterns. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to stay updated via official alerts and exercise caution during heavy spells. This early advancement in key zones signals a promising start for the agricultural season, even as the nation watches the monsoon’s full evolution.
