Tej Pratap Yadav, the leader of the Janshakti Janata Dal and a former Bihar minister, was detained on Sunday, July 26, 2026, according to his attorney, for reportedly participating in demonstrations against the NEET paper leak in the State capital. He said that the arrest was made the day before the police filed a formal complaint.
However, the police remained silent about the accusation made by Jagannath Singh, Mr. Yadav’s attorney.
Tej Pratap Yadav was arrested on July 25 at roughly 7:30 p.m. from a Patna mall, and the FIR against him was filed on July 26. On Sunday, July 26, at roughly 12:15 a.m., he appeared before the judicial magistrate court, which placed him in judicial detention. “My client is currently incarcerated at Beur Central Jail,” the attorney stated.
Mr. Singh stated that he would request Mr. Yadav’s bail in a court of competent jurisdiction on Monday, July 27.
The NEET paper leak protests in Patna on Saturday, July 25, escalated due to Mr. Yadav’s actions, according to the police, and caused property damage.
Mr. Yadav was arrested and removed in a police car shortly after he joined demonstrators during a sit-in at Patna’s Ram Gulam Chowk.
Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor, who is running in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, responded to Mr. Yadav’s arrest by saying, “Tej Pratap Yadav supported me, so he was sent to jail.” The BJP is abusing the government to harass Jan Suraaj Party leaders and people who support us.
After being dismissed by his father Lalu Prasad’s RJD, Mr. Yadav founded the Janshakti Janata Dal and recently declared his support for Mr. Kishor in the Bankipur bypoll.
Following the returning officer’s rejection of JJD’s candidate Vina Mandavi’s nomination, he made his announcement.
Although the populace currently favors political change, Mr. Yadav had stated that Bankipur was seen as a BJP stronghold.
