Family Members Arrested in Tamil Nadu for Alleged Murder Over Woman’s Online Relationship

In a tragic incident from Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, a 19-year-old woman named Abiselvi was allegedly killed by her brother and mother due to her relationship with a man she met on Instagram. Authorities have arrested both family members, who initially attempted to portray the death as a suicide.

Abiselvi had been in a relationship with Hari Prasad from Salem. The pair connected through the social media platform. Her brother, Thirugnanam, reportedly strongly disapproved of the connection and insisted that she sever all ties with the man. Despite his objections, she continued the relationship.

On June 9, Abiselvi was discovered dead at home. Her mother and brother informed police that she had died by suicide, hanging herself. Officers initially registered the case as an unnatural death based on the family’s account.

Subsequent examination during the post-mortem raised doubts about the suicide narrative. A detailed investigation revealed evidence that Thirugnanam had strangled his sister amid an argument. His mother is accused of assisting in covering up the crime by helping to stage the scene as a suicide. Following scientific methods in the probe, police arrested both the brother and mother on charges of murder.

According to preliminary findings shared by investigators, the brother had never met his sister’s partner in person. He knew only the man’s name and possessed a single photograph. Officials have stated there appears to be no caste-related motive involved in the case.

The incident has drawn attention from various political parties, who have labeled it a potential honour killing and called on the government to introduce specific legislation aimed at curbing such acts. Police, however, have not yet formally confirmed this perspective.

This case highlights ongoing concerns around family opposition to personal relationships, particularly those formed online, in certain parts of the country. Investigations continue as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events.
