Former Aam Aadmi Party Councillor Tahir Hussain and others were found guilty by a Delhi court on Monday of killing Intelligence Bureau (IB) employee Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi riots. The order was issued by Karkardooma Courts’ Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh. Hussain was found guilty of violating Sections 188, 153A, 147, 148, 149, 365, and 302 of the Indian Penal Code. He was found not guilty of violating Sections 120B and 129 of the IPC.
The judge also found Javed, Anas, Nazim, and Kasim guilty of killing Ankit Sharma. Six further defendants in the case have been found not guilty by the court. All of the other defendants in the case were given bail, with the exception of Tahir Hussain, Nazim, and Kasim. In September of last year, the High Court denied Hussain’s request for bail. The matter concerns FIR 65 of 2020, which was filed at the Dayalpur police station.
The deceased’s father’s complaint served as the basis for the filing of the FIR. When his son vanished during the riots, his dad filed a missing person’s report. Later, Ankit’s body was found in a drain. The GTB hospital proclaimed him dead. At approximately 5 p.m. on the specified date, Ankit Sharma, the complainant’s son, an Intelligence Bureau officer, left his home to buy groceries and other household necessities. But even after a few hours, he did not come home. His corpse was later discovered in a drain close to Chand Bagh Pulia. His head, face, chest, back, and waist were all severely injured.
The complainant then filed a formal complaint, claiming that he had serious suspicions that Tahir Hussain and his associates were responsible for his son’s death. According to Ankit Sharma’s post-mortem report, blunt force and sharp-edged weaponry caused 51 injuries.
Tahir Hussain, Haseen, Nazim, Kasim, Sameer Khan, Anas, Firoz, Javed, Gulfam, Shoaib Alam, and Muntajim were all charged by the trial court in March 2023. Sections 147, 148, 153A, 302, 365, 120B, 149, 188, and 153A of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 were used to create the charges. Hussain was also charged under IPC sections 505, 109, and 114. Nazim was also prosecuted under section 25 of the Arms Act.
