Sunetra Pawar Takes Charge As Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister At Mantralaya

Mumbai : Sunetra Pawar formally took over her duties as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, settling into her official role at the Mantralaya in Mumbai, officials said. Pawar, the first woman to hold the post in the state’s history, assumed charge a short time after being sworn in as deputy CM at the end of January, following the sudden death of her husband, late Ajit Pawar, in a plane accident.

Her first day in office began with personal and ceremonial engagements. In the morning, Pawar visited the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai to seek blessings for her new responsibilities. She was accompanied by her son, Parth Pawar, and senior political leaders, including NCP figures and women’s commission representatives.

Following her temple visit, Pawar went to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, where she paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar, laying floral offerings and observing a moment of silence at the memorial for the architect of India’s Constitution.

Later, the deputy CM stopped at the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) office in Mumbai, where party workers and leaders greeted her warmly. There she honoured the memory of her late husband, expressing solidarity with supporters as she stepped into her expanded leadership role.

At the Mantralaya, Pawar was seen seated at her desk, formally taking on her ministerial responsibilities. In the recent cabinet lineup, she was entrusted with significant departments, including state excise, sports and youth welfare, and minority development and Aukaf, and was appointed guardian minister for Pune and Beed districts.

Her assumption of duties comes amid ongoing political shifts in the state following the tragic loss of Ajit Pawar and positions her as a central figure in Maharashtra’s governance.
