Jharkhand Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu Dies Of Heart Attack, JMM Mourns Sudden Loss

Ranchi: Jharkhand was left stunned on Sunday after state minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Sudivya Kumar Sonu died following a heart attack. His sudden death has come as a shock to the JMM, the state government and his supporters in Giridih.

Sonu, who was the MLA from Giridih Sadar, was an important member of Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s government. He had been handling several key departments and was closely associated with the JMM leadership.

According to reports, Sonu’s health suddenly worsened on Saturday night. He was taken to a hospital in Giridih, where doctors tried to save him, but he could not be revived. Reports have put his age at either 54 or 56.

The news of his death quickly spread across Jharkhand, prompting condolences from political leaders and JMM workers. Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed deep grief over the loss of his colleague and described Sonu as someone who had stood by him through difficult times.

Who was Sudivya Kumar Sonu?

Sonu had emerged as a prominent JMM face from Giridih. He first won the Giridih Assembly seat in 2019 and successfully retained it in the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly election.

After the formation of the Hemant Soren led government, Sonu was given several important responsibilities. His portfolios included Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development and Housing, Tourism, Art and Culture, and Sports and Youth Affairs.

Over the years, he became known as a dependable leader within the JMM and was actively involved in government and party affairs.

Sonu’s Last Government Assignment

Interestingly, Sonu had been active in official work until just days before his death. He had recently returned from Karnataka, where he led a Jharkhand government delegation to study tourism related infrastructure and management.

The visit was aimed at exploring ideas that could potentially be adapted for Jharkhand, particularly in tourism and forest management.

His sudden passing has therefore come at a time when he was still actively involved in government responsibilities.

Sonu is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. His death has left the JMM mourning the loss of a young and active political leader, while Giridih has lost a sitting MLA who had represented the constituency for two consecutive terms.

For the JMM and the Hemant Soren government, Sudivya Kumar Sonu’s death marks a deeply painful and unexpected loss.
