Veteran actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha has firmly rejected suggestions that he might switch allegiance, declaring his steadfast commitment to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Trinamool Congress MP from Asansol sparked discussion after posting a message on social media congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi on completing 12 years in office. In the post, Sinha described Modi as a “friend and guide” to society and the nation, wishing him continued health and prosperity. He also tagged Banerjee in the message.
This came against the backdrop of reports linking him to a group of Trinamool Congress MPs raising concerns internally. Speculation intensified about his possible involvement with the faction reportedly led by MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. Sinha quickly moved to dispel these notions.
“I have heard many things being said about me. Some claim I am part of the rebel group. None of this is true,” he stated, adding that he would never leave Banerjee, whom he affectionately refers to as “Didi.”
Sinha credited Banerjee with standing by him during difficult periods and vowed to reciprocate that support. He noted that he had contested the Lok Sabha election from Asansol at her urging and emphasized his resolve to remain loyal.

The Asansol MP’s political journey has seen several shifts. He began his career with the Bharatiya Janata Party, serving as a prominent leader and Union Minister for many years before leaving due to ideological differences. In 2019, he contested from Patna Sahib on a Congress ticket but was unsuccessful. He joined the Trinamool Congress in 2022, winning the Asansol by-election and retaining the seat in the 2024 general elections.
Sinha’s latest statements appear aimed at quelling any uncertainty about his position within the party. By publicly praising the Prime Minister while simultaneously reinforcing his ties to Banerjee, he has sought to balance expressions of respect across the political spectrum with clear party loyalty. His clarification underscores a commitment to the Trinamool Congress leader who provided him an opportunity to return to active electoral politics in West Bengal.
