Govt Approves Rs 1.25 Lakh Crore For Semiconductor Mission 2.0

According to sources, the Finance Ministry’s expenditure department will approve a budget proposal that allocates ₹1.25 lakh crore for India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, as the nation seeks to fulfill its aspirations to become a global hub for semiconductors.

The approval is noteworthy because it exceeds the ₹76,000 crore budgeted for ISM 1.0.

According to sources, the ₹1.25 lakh crore investment for ISM 2.0 would be approved by the Expenditure Finance Committee and presented to the Cabinet.

The second edition of the India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to support the nation’s chip manufacturing ecosystem by promoting equipment, materials, indigenous designs, and other related components, was one of the measures announced in the February Budget, which aimed to significantly boost the nation’s manufacturing capabilities.

The government has insisted that the Union Budget 2026–2027’s India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which focuses on semiconductor equipment, materials, domestic intellectual property, and robust supply chains, demonstrates India’s strong commitment to chip production.

The India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 will give priority to indigenous chip design, productization, attracting ecosystem partners, and talent development, according to earlier statements made by Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Under the India Semiconductor Mission, up to 12 semiconductor manufacturing projects totaling around ₹1.64 lakh crore have been approved. These projects include one semiconductor fabrication unit, two compound semiconductor fabrication units, and nine packaging units.
