India has summoned a senior Russian diplomat to convey its strong concerns after four Indian nationals were killed in an attack on a commercial ship near the Ukrainian coast. The incident occurred when the vessel MV Golden Leo came under fire while departing from the port of Odesa on Sunday. One additional Indian crew member sustained critical injuries and remains under medical care.
The ship carried 17 crew members in total, including five Indians. The Indian government expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and condemned attacks on civilian merchant vessels and seafarers. Officials stated that such actions against commercial shipping and innocent personnel were unacceptable and posed risks to international navigation and trade.
The government confirmed that its mission in Ukraine is actively monitoring developments and providing all possible assistance to those affected. One of the deceased was identified as 26-year-old merchant navy officer Akhil Joyan from Kerala. He had recently returned home on leave, got engaged, and resumed duties only a month prior.
The strike has drawn attention to the dangers faced by seafarers in the region amid ongoing conflict. India has reiterated its position that targeting commercial ships endangers lives and disrupts global maritime activities that are essential for international commerce.
