Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh: The elation surrounding Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) second consecutive IPL title triumph quickly descended into disorder as enthusiastic supporters resorted to damaging public and private property in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool and certain areas of Hyderabad on Sunday night.
Authorities have taken 18 individuals into custody for their alleged involvement in the destruction of public assets, including state transport buses, as well as private vehicles and roadside infrastructure during the post-match festivities.
The unrest unfolded near Raj Vihar Centre in Kurnool city shortly after the IPL final concluded. Crowds of cricket fans spilled onto the streets to mark RCB’s victory, but the gathering soon turned unruly. Agitated supporters targeted several buses operated by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), smashing windows and inflicting significant damage on public property. Incidents of vandalism also extended to nearby private vehicles and other roadside installations.
In response to public complaints, a formal case was lodged. District Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil instructed his team to swiftly identify the culprits using available evidence. Police teams reviewed CCTV recordings from the vicinity, videos circulating on social media platforms, and additional technical leads, which enabled them to pinpoint and apprehend the 18 suspects involved in the mayhem.
On Monday, the arrested individuals were escorted from the Two Town Police Station to the local court under heavy security. In a notable move, officers marched alongside the accused through the city streets, an action that drew considerable attention from local residents and shopkeepers.
