Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two key extensions to the Delhi Metro network on Sunday, including the completion of India’s first fully operational Ring Metro, while also laying the foundation stones for additional lines and related infrastructure projects totaling around ₹33,500 crore.
The inaugurations covered the 12.3-km Majlis Park-Maujpur Babarpur section of the Pink Line, featuring eight elevated stations. This stretch finalizes the Pink Line’s circular alignment, extending it to approximately 71.56 km and establishing it as the country’s first complete Ring Metro. The new section significantly enhances connectivity in northern and northeastern Delhi, serving neighborhoods such as Burari, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, and Maujpur-Babarpur.
The second corridor opened was the 9.9-km Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park extension of the Magenta Line, an elevated addition with seven stations. It strengthens links in northwestern Delhi, benefiting areas including Madhuban Chowk, Uttar Pitampura-Prashant Vihar, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalaswa, and Majlis Park, while improving overall commuter access across the city.
These metro inaugurations, valued at roughly ₹18,300 crore, form part of broader efforts to modernize urban transport. During the event at Burari ground, the Prime Minister also laid foundation stones for three new corridors under Phase V-A of the Delhi Metro expansion, spanning about 16.1 km in total. These include the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha line, the Aerocity to Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1 route, and the Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj corridor. The projects aim to deliver direct access to major destinations and boost integration between Noida, South Delhi, and the airport.
The Prime Minister highlighted the accelerated pace of development in the national capital under recent governance, noting improvements in public transport to reduce travel times and enhance convenience, particularly for women and daily commuters. He also inaugurated and laid foundations for General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment projects worth ₹15,200 crore, contributing to the overall ₹33,500 crore initiative.
The expansions reflect continued focus on upgrading Delhi’s infrastructure, easing congestion, and promoting efficient, modern connectivity in line with national priorities.
