Oslo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on Tuesday, meeting with leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden to discuss cooperation on clean energy, sustainability, innovation, and emerging technologies.
“Our discussions focused on several aspects, including sustainability, innovation, clean energy, emerging technologies and strengthening cooperation for a peaceful and prosperous future,” Modi said in a post on X. He added that “India and the Nordic countries are united by shared democratic values, trust and a common commitment towards human-centric development.
Ahead of the main summit, Modi held separate bilateral meetings with the leaders of Iceland, Finland, and Denmark.
Iceland
Modi met Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, with discussions covering green technology, carbon management, sustainable fishing, the Blue Economy, digital technologies, the creative economy, Arctic cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges, according to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues. Modi noted Iceland’s strengths in the Blue Economy and expressed hope that the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement would boost trade and investment ties between the two countries.
Finland
Modi subsequently met Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. The two leaders discussed partnerships in artificial intelligence, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies, and circular economy models. According to the MEA spokesperson, they also underlined the importance of the early entry into force of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement.
Denmark
Modi met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to advance the green strategic partnership between India and Denmark, with discussions covering sustainability and digitalisation.
The five Nordic nations Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden have a combined economic output exceeding USD 1.9 trillion.
Modi arrived in Oslo from Sweden on Monday as part of a five-nation tour covering the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy from May 15 to 20. Italy is the final leg of the visit.
