Petrol-Diesel Price Hike Fake ! Govt Fact-Check Debunks Viral Claims

New Delhi: The central government has dismissed circulating claims about a hike in petrol and diesel prices, clarifying that no such decision has been taken. The clarification came after several posts on social media alleged that fuel prices had been increased significantly.

The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) fact-check unit intervened on April 29 to address the misinformation. In an official statement shared on social media platform X, the unit categorically stated that the claims were false and that the government had not issued any order to increase fuel prices.

The misleading reports had suggested that petrol prices would be raised by ₹10 per litre and diesel by ₹12.50 per litre. These claims quickly gained traction online, triggering concern among citizens already wary of rising living costs. However, the PIB Fact Check emphasised that such messages were fabricated and urged the public to rely only on verified government sources for accurate information.

The clarification also comes amid broader speculation around fuel price revisions, particularly in the context of ongoing elections and global crude oil volatility. Despite these concerns, the government has consistently maintained that there is no proposal under consideration to increase retail fuel prices at present.

Previously, Nilanjan Das, an All India Trinamool Congress member, claimed in a post that the “anti-people” BJP-led administration has audaciously increased fuel prices during the ongoing state elections in West Bengal.

TMC and BJP are engaged in a fierce competition in West Bengal, where the second phase of elections commenced on April 29. The assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu have concluded, and the results will be announced on May 4.

He criticized the government for purportedly profiting from low global crude oil prices, claiming it will now impose a burden on the public as prices increase.

“Election worries behind, inflation’s intensity is approaching!” Post-April 29th, be cautious – fuel, diesel, everything will become pricier. When (crude) oil was inexpensive, the Modi administration took the gains. Since it’s costly now, it will shift the responsibility to you,” Gandhi stated in a post in Hindi on X.

“A government that pillages when it’s inexpensive – forcing the public to endure the impact of inflation,” he claimed.

Oil prices worldwide are increasing because of the conflict in West Asia. On February 28, Israel and the United States launched an attack on Iran, leading to a disruption in the global oil supply chain because of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A high-ranking official stated on Tuesday that the government does not intend to increase petrol and diesel prices, refuting rumors of a rise after elections in West Bengal conclude on April 29.
