Pakistan Navy Provides Humanitarian Aid to Stranded Indian Vessel in Arabian Sea

In a notable cross-border maritime assistance operation, the Pakistan Navy swiftly responded to an SOS from a distressed Indian cargo ship in the Arabian Sea, delivering critical support to its multinational crew.

The vessel, MV Gautam, encountered a serious technical malfunction while sailing from Oman to India, leaving it immobilized at sea. Acting on a formal request from India’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai, Pakistani authorities in Islamabad promptly mobilized resources to assist the seven crew members six Indians and one Indonesian.

According to details shared via a Pakistani military statement and reported by Reuters, the Pakistan Navy deployed the PMSS Kashmir to conduct rescue and support operations. The team provided essential emergency assistance, including food supplies, medical aid, and technical support aimed at stabilizing the ship and safeguarding the crew’s well-being.

The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) supported the navy throughout the effort. Footage shared by Qatar’s Gulf Times on social media captured the operation, showing Pakistani naval personnel extending help to the crew of the MV Gautam following the distress signal.

This incident highlights routine maritime cooperation in the region despite political tensions. The Pakistan Navy has a track record of responding to distress calls from vessels of various nationalities. Just last month, it carried out a similar humanitarian mission, rescuing and evacuating 18 crew members from the merchant vessel MV Gold Autumn in the northern Arabian Sea. Those crew included nationals from China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The ship was located approximately 200 nautical miles (around 370 km) off Pakistan’s coast.

The latest operation underscores the importance of international collaboration in ensuring safety at sea, where prompt response to emergencies can prevent loss of life and further complications. Pakistani officials described the intervention as a standard humanitarian response coordinated through established maritime channels.

Such incidents serve as a reminder of the shared challenges faced by seafaring nations and the practical value of coordinated search and rescue protocols in busy waterways like the Arabian Sea. The crew of MV Gautam is now reported to be safe following the timely assistance.
