Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted searches at the residences of three students in Maharashtra’s Nagpur and Chandrapur districts as part of its ongoing investigation into the leak of the NEET-UG examination papers.
A joint team comprising officials from the CBI’s New Delhi unit and local personnel in Nagpur carried out the raids on Tuesday. The operation targeted two students in Nagpur and one student from Brahmapuri taluka in Chandrapur district. Authorities seized documents and notes from the premises and are examining whether any of the material matches the leaked question paper.
The searches followed leads obtained by the agency regarding mobile phone numbers linked to students in the city. The CBI is probing whether the three students from the Vidarbha region had purchased the leaked paper or circulated it further. Agency sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, clarified that Nagpur is not the epicentre of the leak operation, even as nationwide searches continue.
The Economic Offences Wing of the CBI in New Delhi has registered a case concerning the leak of the NEET biology and chemistry papers. As part of the probe, the agency took Prof. Shivraj Motegaonkar, director of ‘RCC Classes’ in Latur, into custody on Monday. Investigators suspect that as many as one thousand students may have bought the leaked paper through fraudulent means.
The action in Maharashtra forms part of a broader CBI crackdown on the scandal that has shaken confidence in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), a critical examination for medical admissions across the country. Officials continue to trace the origins and spread of the leaked content while examining connections between various individuals involved.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of the examination process and calls for greater accountability in the conduct of national-level tests. The CBI’s multi-state operation underscores the seriousness with which authorities are pursuing all leads in the case.
