19 Dead in Nagaland After Consuming Suspected Spurious Liquor

At least 19 people have died in Nagaland after consuming suspected adulterated liquor, prompting police to launch a special investigation and conduct raids across the state.

The deaths occurred over the past two days, with eight reported in Mokokchung district and 11 in Tuensang district. Nagaland has had a prohibition law in force since 1990.

A Special Investigation Team, headed by Additional Superintendent of Police I. Bunglang Chang, has been formed to probe the deaths and trace the source and supply chain of the suspected illicit liquor. Senior Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo said samples have been sent to Guwahati for forensic examination to determine the exact cause. He added that investigators have obtained some leads but it is too early to share details.

Following the incidents, police carried out multiple raids, arresting 19 people and seizing close to 3,000 bottles of liquor.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid unidentified, unlabelled or suspected illicit liquor. Anyone who experiences symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, breathing difficulties or loss of consciousness after consuming alcohol has been urged to seek medical attention immediately.

The tragedy has highlighted ongoing challenges related to the circulation of illegal liquor in a dry state, with investigators working to identify the source and prevent further harm.
