
Mumbai: Three sewer workers sustained serious injuries after a speeding tempo rammed into them in Mumbai’s Powai area, with the driver fleeing the scene immediately after the incident, according to a report by Free Press Journal. The accident occurred in Morarji Nagar, where the workers had been assigned sewer cleaning duties by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
As reported by the Free Press Journal, the workers were engaged in their routine task when the tempo, allegedly travelling at high speed, crashed into them. The driver did not stop to assist the injured and escaped, raising concerns about road safety and accountability in the city.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered against an unidentified driver, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the accused. The Powai Police have launched an investigation into the matter, focusing on both the hit-and-run aspect and the circumstances surrounding the work site.
The report further states that the contractor responsible for deploying the workers has been detained for questioning. Authorities are also examining whether adequate safety measures were in place at the location where the workers were operating.
All three injured workers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be in critical condition. The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by sanitation workers, particularly when operating in areas with vehicular movement.
According to Free Press Journal, the investigation is ongoing, with police working to gather evidence and determine the sequence of events leading up to the accident. The case underscores the need for stricter enforcement of safety norms and greater accountability on city roads.
