Mumbai Police Dismiss Constable Over Negligence In Baba Siddique Attack Case

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police’s Protection and Security Department has dismissed Head Constable Shyam Magan Sonawane over alleged negligence during the 2024 attack on former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddique in Bandra East. The action was taken following a departmental inquiry that reportedly found lapses in the constable’s performance while he was assigned to Siddique’s security detail.

According to the official order issued by the office of the Additional Commissioner of Police, Protection and Security, Sonawane was deployed as the bodyguard of Baba Siddique on October 12, 2024, when the attack took place outside the office of Siddique’s son, Zeeshan Siddique, in Mumbai’s Bandra East area. The veteran politician was later taken to Lilavati Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officials stated that Sonawane, attached to the Protection and Security branch of Mumbai Police, was suspended after the incident and subjected to a departmental investigation. The inquiry reportedly concluded that he had acted irresponsibly and failed in the discharge of his duties during the attack.

Following the inquiry, the constable was served with a show-cause notice asking why disciplinary action should not be initiated against him. Authorities later issued a termination order, which Sonawane accepted on May 2, 2026. Mumbai Police subsequently removed him from service on charges of dereliction of duty. Media reports by Free Press Journal and other agencies stated that the dismissal was directly linked to negligence during Siddique’s security deployment.
