Mumbai : Actor Imran Khan, superstar Aamir Khan’s nephew, has been asked to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a protest on October 10. The actor was among those who gathered at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan to demand the CEC’s resignation. Reports suggest that the action against Imran has been initiated under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act, allegedly because he participated in a protest despite not being an Indian citizen. He is reportedly not an Indian citizen.
BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya, demanded the actor’s deportation, claiming he is a US citizen. Somaiya also urged Mumbai Police to verify Khan’s citizenship and questioned whether a foreign national should be taking part in a political agitation. While speaking about joining the protest earlier, Khan told the media that he was there as a Mumbai resident, not as a representative of any political group.
On Saturday evening, he had shared a photo from inside the police van after being detained, captioning it, “Apparently, I am going for a ride.” His participation later made his fans anoint him as the real “Ranjhore Ka Rathore”, in a cheeky reference to his character in his debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Earlier, former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya had written to Mumbai police seeking action against Imran for taking part in the protest held in Mumbai on Saturday in support of Cockroach Janta Party despite being a “foreign citizen”.
Imran Khan clarified that he was not present at the protests with any specific demands but had come forward in his capacity as a citizen of Mumbai. He said he wanted to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted and why people’s voices were being suppressed. “I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people’s voices being suppressed? That is why I am here,” the actor said.
