Manipuri Musician Beaten To Death Outside His House In Delhi

Around midnight on Sunday, a neighbor of Manipuri musician C Vikram Singh heard a disturbance outside her house. She briefly went outside to witness a group of people pursuing someone before fear compelled her to close her door.

The following morning, she discovered that Singh had been beaten to death. The neighbor, who is on the second level of the same building where Singh was on the third floor and is also from Manipur, described the traumatic events that occurred on Tuesday.

According to police, a gang of delivery workers and dhaba employees allegedly attacked the 54-year-old musician (guitarist) after he complained to them yelling and consuming beer outside his apartment in Kilokari village in southeast Delhi.

“I observed some individuals sprinting behind an individual. It was dark outside, so I had no idea who they were. The neighbor added, “I closed my door because I was afraid and it was late because they were abusing him.” She characterized Singh as a soft-spoken, modest man who had spent eight or nine years living in the area.

“He was an extremely modest individual. He didn’t even speak out. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “They were shouting so much that even I felt unsafe after hearing the loud noise.” She claimed that before pursuing and beating Singh outdoors, the accused had first gone to his house and attacked him there. She didn’t find out that Singh had been brutally beaten until the following morning.

Singh was taken to Holy Family Hospital by his son Yaiphaba after he was hurt in the attack. According to police, he later passed away from his wounds. In connection to the crime, police have detained a youngster and arrested seven men.

Bharat Kumar (19), Pramod (26), Ramzan Khan (22), Deepanshu (21), Mohan Vishwakarma (32), Vijay (36), and Mannu (26) were named as the accused. They all work at various dhabas and food stands, according to the police. A PCR call about the event had been received by the Sunlight Colony police station.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that Singh had protested to a group of individuals causing trouble outside his home. They also stated that they were looking into the possibility that the murder had a racist motive.

Members of Delhi’s northeastern population have also expressed worry over the event, claiming that they are still subjected to prejudice and racial taunts.

“Racism is a constant here. We are happy to be Indian, even though many refer to us as Chinese or Momo. The neighbor asked, “Why do people not consider us to be Indians?” According to her, people from the Northeast should not be subjected to prejudice or mistreatment when they travel to Delhi in quest of better chances.

Another neighbour reported that “residents were deeply disturbed that another Indian brother had been killed after objecting to loud noise and drinking”. Residents and community members also staged a candle march, calling for severe punishment for Singh’s killer.

Singh was a well-known Manipuri musician, according to the North East Students Society, Delhi University (NESSDU), which expressed condolences for his passing.

It encouraged authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, and comprehensive inquiry and described the event as a senseless act of violence.

The events leading up to the assault and Singh’s death are being investigated, according to the police.
