There is no shortage of LPG at distributorships across the country, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said, even as it acknowledged that supply remains a concern and directed states to make provisions for migrant labourers.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said at an inter-ministerial briefing that the government will give state governments an additional 10% LPG supply if they comply with transfers of LPG consumers to piped natural gas (PNG) connections. She also noted that around 50% of commercial LPG volume will be at the disposal of states and union territories.
Sharma said panic buying has reduced further. Approximately 3.5 lakh domestic and commercial PNG connections have been given or activated over the last three weeks. “Supply of LPG still remains a matter of concern, but there is no dry out at the LPG distributorships,” she said.
The Centre has asked state governments to allot five kg free trade LPG (FTL) cylinders specifically for migrant workers. States have in turn urged restaurants, dhabas, hotels, industrial canteens, food processing units, dairy units, and subsidised or state-run food outlets, as well as community kitchens operated by local bodies, to extend assistance during this period.
