Opposition Women MPs Surround PM Modi’s Seat, Sparking Lok Sabha Uproar And Canceling His Address

In a dramatic turn of events in the Lok Sabha, intense protests by Opposition members culminated in the cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled response to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address. The disruption, which unfolded on Wednesday, stemmed from ongoing tensions that began earlier when Rahul Gandhi was prevented from citing passages from the unpublished memoirs of former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane.
The Lower House faced multiple adjournments throughout the day amid the Opposition’s agitation. When proceedings resumed around 5 pm, just ahead of the Prime Minister’s anticipated speech, several women MPs from the Opposition ranks took decisive action. Prominent among them were Varsha Gaikwad and Jyotimani, who positioned themselves around the seats allocated to ruling party members, including the Prime Minister’s chair. Holding a prominent banner proclaiming “Do what is right,” the group effectively blocked access in protest against the recent suspension of eight Opposition MPs.
The acting Speaker, Sandhya Rai, promptly adjourned the session in response to the blockade. The women MPs eventually vacated the area only after persistent requests from several government ministers.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari described the incident as alarming, that the women MPs had strategically positioned themselves around the Prime Minister’s seat in a premeditated move. He credited Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s swift intervention for de-escalating the situation and preventing further escalation. Tiwari suggested the action reflected the Congress party’s desperation.

Later, when the House reconvened at noon, Opposition members rose again, chanting slogans focused on the 2020 India-China border standoff. The renewed commotion forced another adjournment, sealing the fate of the Prime Minister’s address for the day.
The Motion of Thanks remains unapproved by the Lok Sabha. Proceedings have been deferred until Thursday, raising expectations that the debate and related discussions will extend into the following session.
