Government and Opposition Trade Blame After Video Surfaces of Dispute in Lok Sabha Speaker’s Chamber

New Delhi : Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has released a short video clip alleging that a group of Congress MPs forcibly entered the chamber of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, used abusive language against him and issued threats against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a heated confrontation in Parliament. Rijiju described the footage as an illegal video clip. He said it was recorded by one of the Congress members and shared it on social media to substantiate his claims.

In his post, the minister said around 20–25 MPs from the Congress were seen inside the Speaker’s office raising their voices and confronting Birla, and he asserted that some comments appeared to be directed at the prime minister. He maintained that the BJP stands for debate and discussion but categorically does not condone intimidation or threats.

Rijiju’s statement follows a recent series of clashes between the ruling coalition and the opposition over procedural issues in the Lok Sabha, including disputes about who may speak and how parliamentary business should proceed. He told reporters that the Speaker was “deeply hurt” by the alleged incident and noted that his rulings were not respected during the fracas.

The Congress party has responded critically to the government’s narrative, with senior members rejecting the allegations. Women MPs from the party have written to Speaker Birla, calling claims that they threatened the prime minister false and defamatory, and insisting the video has been mischaracterised.

The episode underscores heightened tensions in Parliament during the ongoing session, with both sides accusing each other of undermining decorum and standards of conduct within the House.
