Kolkata: In the run-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, authorities have clarified the schedule for “dry days” in Kolkata, following queries about restrictions before polling dates. According to a report by Livemint, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has specified that the prohibition on the sale of liquor will be enforced in accordance with polling phases.
The ECI stated that dry days will be observed 48 hours prior to the conclusion of voting in each phase. This means that areas going to polls on April 23 will see liquor sales banned starting from the evening of April 21 until the end of polling. Similarly, for constituencies voting on April 29, restrictions will begin from April 27 and remain in effect until voting concludes.
Officials clarified that these measures are part of standard election protocols aimed at ensuring free and fair polling. The restrictions apply to all establishments licensed to sell alcohol, including bars, restaurants, and liquor shops.
Livemint reported that the clarification was issued after confusion arose regarding whether a uniform dry day would be implemented across Kolkata or if it would vary by polling phase. The ECI emphasized that the restrictions will be applied phase-wise, depending on the specific constituencies voting on each date.
Authorities have urged citizens and businesses to comply with the guidelines to avoid penalties. The enforcement of dry days is a routine step during elections to maintain law and order and prevent undue influence on voters.
