From Tragedy To Hope: Kerala Honours Youngest Organ Donor

Kochi : In Pathanamthitta, Kerala, the state on Sunday laid to rest 10-month-old Aalin Sherin Abraham, who became the youngest organ donor in Kerala’s history after her parents chose to donate her organs following her tragic death in a road accident earlier this month. The ceremony, held at St Thomas CSI Church in Nedungadappally, was conducted with full state honours and drew hundreds of mourners, including senior political figures and local residents.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised the family’s decision as an extraordinary act of compassion that has extended the gift of life to five children. In his tribute, the chief minister noted that Aalin’s parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, made a selfless choice in their moment of grief, underscoring the spirit of humanity that the act reflected.

Aalin sustained severe injuries when the family’s vehicle was struck by another car near Pallam Borma Junction in Kottayam district on February 5. She was initially treated at local hospitals before being moved to a Kochi facility. Despite intensive care, doctors declared her brain-dead on February 12. With her parents’ consent, multiple organs including her liver, kidneys, heart valve, and corneas were retrieved and successfully transplanted, giving new chances at life to children in need.

Law enforcement personnel provided a ceremonial guard of honour during the funeral service, and both state and union ministers were present to honour the infant’s memory. Union Minister Suresh Gopi conveyed that while Aalin’s body was being laid to rest, her legacy will endure through the lives she helped save.

Expressions of grief and admiration for the family’s resolve also came from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and celebrities such as actors Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan, who acknowledged the profound impact of the family’s decision.
