Homecoming? Will Didi become one with Congress again?

After BJP’s historic mandate in West Bengal, that saw the Trinamool Congress losing power, fresh rumors have emerged that say that Mamata Banerjee’s TMC might be merged with the Congress party to become a stronger opposition against the BJP, which today marked over 12 years in power, undefeated.

Mamata met Sonia Gandhi on Monday in Delhi, her nephew met LOP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday and Mamata is again scheduled to meet Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday, to discuss about the future of the party and the INDI Alliance, which seems to have taken the backseat post 2024 elections.

Mamata Banerjee founded the TMC in 1997 after she split from the Congress party. Over the past 15 years, Mamata Banerjee has enjoyed a near undefeated rule in power in Bengal where she and her TMC MLAs and MPs ruled with an iron fist. During her rule, West Bengal was probably one of the only states in India that did not see any noticeable growth. In fact, there were few parameters on which it regressed. It had become a routine that after elections, there would be violence against the opposition and opposition MLAs and MPs, led by those in power, which was the TMC.

But this year’s West Bengal elections was a huge shock to Mamata Banerjee and the TMC. BJP rode to power for the first time in West Bengal. And many TMC MLAs and MPs were now on the receiving end of the violence. Many TMC MLAs and MPs have already started leaving the party, including many notable names like leader of opposition of Bengal, Ritabrata Banerjee.

What will be the outcome of this merger? Will this just be another anti-BJP alliance, or will there be a concrete merger between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress, which could result in perhaps the BJP having to be on guard against other regional parties forming a similar merger?
