Haryana Aunt’s Deadly Spree Targets Nieces’ Beauty, Claims Young Son’s Life Too

Haryana Police investigations have uncovered a chilling pattern of violence, revealing that a 32-year-old woman systematically murdered three young girls— all relatives— over the last two years, driven by intense jealousy over their appearance. In a bid to deflect growing suspicion from her family, she also drowned her own three-year-old son, authorities disclosed on Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as Poonam, consistently staged the killings as mishaps by submerging the victims in household water containers like tubs and tanks. Her most recent act unfolded amid a family wedding, claiming the life of her six-year-old niece.

The tragedy struck on Monday in Naultha village, where celebrations abruptly halted when the girl vanished. Hours later, family members discovered her lifeless body in a first-floor storeroom, face-down in a plastic tub brimming with water— her head fully immersed, legs protruding awkwardly.

A swift police probe examined multiple possibilities before zeroing in on foul play. By Wednesday, officers had detained Poonam, the child’s aunt, charging her with murder under relevant sections.

According to investigators, Poonam enticed the girl, named Vidhi, to the storeroom after wedding guests departed on December 1. Spotting Vidhi ascending the stairs, she trailed her to the terrace, engaged her briefly, then forced the child into the water-filled tub positioned just outside the storeroom. She held her under until motionless, secured the door from the exterior, and returned downstairs undetected.

This incident fits a grim sequence. As reported by PTI, in 2023, Poonam drowned her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter in a home water tank in Bhawar village, Sonipat district. Anxious that relatives might link her to the death, she soon after killed her toddler son, Shubham, in the same manner to manufacture an alibi of shared misfortune.

The pattern persisted into August 2025, when she allegedly submerged her cousin’s six-year-old daughter in a water tank in Sewah village.

Panipat Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh described Poonam as exhibiting psychopathic traits during interrogation. “She confessed to harboring a deep-seated hatred for attractive girls,” he stated, quoting her Hindi admission: jo sundar bachhiye hain unse inko nafrat si hai. Investigators dismissed any ritualistic motives, attributing the acts purely to personal vendetta.

The SP elaborated on her mindset, relaying her words: She felt an immediate pang of resentment upon seeing a pretty child, tormented by fears that the girl might eclipse her own looks in adulthood— usko chidd machti hai kahi bade hokar issay sundar na ban jaye. “These impulses surfaced post-marriage,” Singh noted. “She lacks formal education and fits a ‘psycho type’ profile.”
