Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday threw India’s support behind the Trump administration-led Gaza Peace Initiative during a landmark address at Israel’s Knesset, calling it a “just and durable” solution for the people of the region, including on the Palestine issue.
Speaking at the Israeli parliament during his two-day state visit to Israel his second to the country Modi made history as the first Indian prime minister ever to address the Knesset.
“Gaza Peace Initiative holds the promise of a just and durable peace for all the people of the region, including by addressing the Palestine issue. The road to peace is not always easy but India joins you and the world for dialogue, peace and stability in this region,” Modi said in his address.
The Prime Minister noted that the Gaza Peace Initiative has been endorsed by the UN Security Council and offers a clear pathway forward, with India expressing firm support for it. Touching on the broader West Asia turmoil, Modi reaffirmed that India stands by Israel during what he described as a difficult time for the region.
Reflecting on recent regional history, Modi referenced the Abraham Accords, saying: “Some years ago, when you concluded the Abraham Accords, we applauded your courage and vision. It was a moment of new hope for our long-troubled region. Since then, however, the situation has changed significantly and the path is more challenging.”
Modi received a standing ovation as he began his speech. He was also conferred the “Speaker of the Knesset Medal” the highest honour bestowed by the parliament becoming the first recipient of the recognition. The medal was awarded in recognition of his exceptional personal leadership in strengthening strategic relations between India and Israel.
