India: As India tuned in to the live stream on the platform Zee5 for the highly touted FIFA World Cup 2026, a template appeared as soon as the audience clicked the icon for the opening match at midnight. The prompt requested payment of 799 rupees for World Cup access, a requirement for the current platform subscribers as well.
Shocked by the high cost, some football enthusiasts paid the subscription fee to watch the match, while others were dejected by the marketing strategy, which many viewers perceived as a “greedy trap.” Non-Zee5 users who purchased a standard monthly subscription hoping for access were denied, as the app prompted them to pay for a dedicated plan costing more than half a thousand rupees for FIFA access. While paid subscriptions are standard for major platforms offering live sports, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled to last around a month and ten days, yet the subscription plan bundled under the guise of a “FIFA upgrade” is for three months. Viewers expect to reduce their engagement with Zee5 once the event concludes, but this strategy appears designed to force the public into a three-month commitment that extends well beyond the tournament. In addition, when Zee5 announced the plan it mentioned a three-device limit but soon it was restricted to only one device suddenly. Expressing the outrage, several social media users confronted the change and observing this the platform restored it to the three-device plan.
Furthermore, the payment process was dysfunctional, leading to failures and time-consuming delays. Even for those whose payments processed, the stream reportedly suffered from low 720p quality, contrasting with the promise of higher quality access. In response to the quality concern, ZEE5 officials have stated that web streams and some live feeds are capped at 720p or SD due to anti-piracy protection. However, for full 1080p Full HD resolution on standard content and select live events, they advise users to switch to the official ZEE5 mobile app or a Smart TV/Fire TV device. Frustrated by these issues, many users took to social media to criticize the platform for the poor experience.
Recently, major sporting events such as the IPL 2026 and the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2026 were easily accessible to subscribers at no extra cost; the streaming was free and convenient. However, the current FIFA World Cup is also available on satellite channels like Unite8 Sports and DD Sports in India. While DD Sports will broadcast selective matches, Unite8 Sports will air every single match from the opening to the final. This serves as a vital alternative for those who feel the monetary barrier for the streaming platform is too high.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 had an explosive opening, with the co-host nation Mexico dominating its opponent South Africa to secure a two goal win. The match was also historic, featuring three red cards, a first for this stage of the tournament. Beyond the play on the pitch, the platform should restructure their system for not functioning properly to provide a user-friendly, stress-free experience for such a rare global event.
