In a shocking sequence of events in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district, a retired army personnel has been linked to the killings of three individuals over a span of about 26 hours, with two murders occurring on moving trains and the third inside a hospital.
The accused, identified as 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh, also known as Virendra, was apprehended by locals shortly after the hospital incident on Monday morning. According to police sources, he later confessed to the crimes during questioning. Singh, who hails from Punjab and had retired from the Army around six years earlier, had been employed as a security guard in Bihar before reportedly losing his job.
The first incident took place on Sunday morning aboard a passenger train in Chandauli. Police said Singh allegedly shot dead 34-year-old Mangru Chaudhary, a resident of Ghazipur district, following a verbal altercation. He then reportedly pushed the victim’s body from the moving train and escaped by jumping off when it slowed down.
In the early hours of Monday, Singh is accused of carrying out another shooting on the Kolkata-Jammu Tawi Express train. He allegedly killed 55-year-old Dinesh Shah, a resident of Gaya in Bihar, near a washroom area shortly after the train departed from PDDU Junction. Passengers alerted railway staff after hearing the gunshot, and the body was recovered when the train reached Varanasi.
Later that same morning, Singh entered a private hospital in Chandauli, registering himself as a patient under the name Virendra and consulting a doctor. He then proceeded to a ward and allegedly shot 55-year-old Laxmina, who was undergoing treatment there and hailed from Bhabua in Bihar, at close range in the head. As he attempted to flee, an alert auto driver and locals caught him, after which he was handed over to the police.

Investigators have recovered licensed firearms from the accused, including a revolver and a sawed-off double-barrel gun, which are being examined. Police, including teams from the Government Railway Police, have found no apparent motive or prior connection between Singh and the victims, describing the killings as random. The accused had arrived in the area recently after traveling from Bihar.
Authorities continue to investigate Singh’s background, movements, and mental state as part of the ongoing probe
