An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Saturday evening, with tremors also felt in India’s Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi-NCR. No reports of loss of life or damage to property have been received from anywhere so far.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring earthquake activity, the quake struck at 7:04 pm IST at a depth of 215 km. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre put the depth at 100 km, while the US Geological Survey located the epicentre 43 km south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan. Tremors were also felt in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, as well as Swat, Hangu, North Waziristan, Chitral and Rawalpindi.
The quake led to panic in some areas of the national capital, with residents rushing outside their homes and offices.
