New Delhi: The Monday morning rush turned into a frustrating ordeal for thousands of Delhi Metro commuters after five key stations in the heart of the capital were temporarily closed due to heightened security arrangements for the CJP’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest.
The sudden restrictions disrupted travel across one of the city’s busiest stretches, leaving passengers scrambling for alternatives. Long queues formed outside several stations, roads around central Delhi witnessed heavy traffic, and many office goers found themselves running late as security measures intensified near Parliament.
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), entry and exit were suspended at Rajiv Chowk, Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth stations following directions from security agencies. While trains continued to pass through some stations, passengers were unable to board or deboard where restrictions were in place.
The closures came as hundreds of CJP supporters gathered in the national capital for a protest march towards Parliament. With the Monsoon Session underway, Delhi Police deployed additional personnel across the high security zone and imposed traffic diversions to prevent large gatherings from reaching restricted areas.
The impact was felt well beyond the protest site. Commuters took to social media to share pictures of crowded platforms, locked station gates and unusually long travel times. Several passengers said they had to switch between metro lines, book cabs or walk considerable distances after learning about the closures.
Delhi Police had earlier advised residents to avoid central Delhi unless necessary, warning that traffic movement around Parliament Street, Janpath, Connaught Place and adjoining roads could remain affected because of security checks and diversions.
Authorities have urged commuters to rely on official updates from the DMRC before beginning their journey. Metro services are expected to return to normal once the security situation eases and restrictions are lifted.
The temporary shutdown once again highlighted how protests and high security deployments in central Delhi can have an immediate ripple effect on the city’s transport network, affecting lakhs of daily commuters even if they are nowhere near the demonstration.
