Several people are feared trapped after a five-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Seemapuri area on Wednesday afternoon.
The Delhi Fire Service received a call about the incident at 3.30 pm and immediately dispatched fire engines to the site. Search and rescue operations are underway.
The collapse comes a month after a hostel building tragedy in Satya Niketan that left seven people dead and several others injured.
Images from the scene showed large numbers of people gathered amid the rubble, with some attempting to clear debris using their hands while others recorded the incident on their phones. The front portion of the building had given way.
A local resident reported that four to five people had been pulled out by bystanders and taken to hospitals. The resident said a child remained trapped and that some individuals had been administered CPR before official teams arrived. Police reached the site about half an hour after the collapse.
Residents claimed the building had developed cracks following tremors felt across Delhi-NCR from an earthquake in Uttarakhand the previous night. Officials stated that the exact cause of the collapse would be determined only after a formal investigation.
Delhi Traffic Police advised the public to avoid the Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and adjoining roads so that ambulances and rescue vehicles could move freely. People were urged not to stop, park or gather near the site and to follow directions from traffic personnel.
