Delhi Capitals Cricketer Abishek Porel Arrested Following High Court Directive

Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a case involving allegations of sexual misconduct and blackmail. The arrest followed a directive issued earlier by the Calcutta High Court, which had instructed police to take him into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

A young woman, identified as a medical student, had filed a complaint alleging that Porel entered into a sexual relationship with her after promising marriage. She further claimed that he later threatened to circulate private photographs of her. The FIR registered at Magra Police Station in Hooghly invoked multiple sections, the majority of which are non-bailable offences.

According to the complaint, the relationship began with discussions of marriage between the families. It allegedly deteriorated after the woman became aware of Porel’s involvement with other women, leading to a breakup. The FIR also states that on April 2, 2026, in Delhi, Porel allegedly confined the complainant, denied her food, and kept her isolated, leaving her physically weak and requiring medical attention. These remain allegations that have not been proven in court.

During an earlier hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya of the Calcutta High Court directed Magra Police to seize all electronic devices belonging to Porel, including his mobile phone, to prevent the possible dissemination of sensitive material. The court also asked the police to submit a detailed report on the steps taken in the investigation.

When the matter came up for hearing on August 11, police informed the court that Porel had been arrested and would be produced before the Chinsurah Court. He was taken into custody in Hooghly, questioned, subjected to a medical examination, and produced before the local court.

Porel has denied the allegations levelled against him. The case continues to remain under investigation, with further legal proceedings expected to follow. The development has drawn attention given Porel’s prominence as a young cricketer representing both Bengal in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
