The BJP was criticized by the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday for congratulating former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Parliament following his resignation. The CPI called this action “shameful” and an insult to students who had demonstrated against alleged irregularities in the educational system.
Speaking at a press conference here, CPI national secretary K. Ramakrishna asserted that Mr. Pradhan’s resignation came only after 49 days of statewide protests, police intervention, and persistent student protests. He questioned why a secular NDA representative had not been selected and claimed that the Center was still giving the Education Ministry to leaders connected to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Additionally, he called for BJP MP Vishweshwar Reddy to be suspended due to his reported comments against students who were protesting.
Mr. Ramakrishna demanded that the cases filed against students during the protests over the NEET paper leak be immediately withdrawn, claiming that the Center had not kept its word to do so. He restated the CPI’s call for the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 to be withdrawn and the National Testing Agency (NTA) to be abolished, claiming that the policy promoted the commercialization and saffronization of education.
Along with criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the agitation, the CPI leader also voiced support for the ongoing student-led “Cockroach” rallies.
