Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stepped down from his post, formally submitting his resignation to the state’s governor, marking the beginning of the process to form a new government in the northeastern state. The move follows the completion of the electoral process and is in line with constitutional procedure after the declaration of results.
According to a report, Sarma met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to hand over his resignation. This step is considered routine in parliamentary democracy, where the incumbent chief minister resigns to allow the formation of a fresh administration after elections.
Sources within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) indicated that preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of the new government. While an official date has not yet been confirmed, party functionaries suggested that the oath-taking could take place around mid-May.
The report further noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony, highlighting the political significance of the event. His presence would underscore the importance the party attaches to the formation of the new government in Assam.

Officials also stated that the formal submission of election results to the governor is a key procedural step that precedes the invitation to form the government. Following this, the governor typically invites the leader of the majority party or coalition to take oath as chief minister.
Sarma, who has been serving as the chief minister since 2021, is widely expected to continue in the role, given the BJP’s position in the state. However, the final decision will be confirmed after the legislative party meeting and the formal swearing-in ceremony.
The resignation marks a transitional phase in Assam’s political landscape, paving the way for the constitution of a new council of ministers and the continuation of governance under a renewed mandate.
