Tensions are rising in the national capital as authorities prepare for a major protest march during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Delhi Police have intensified security measures across key areas, including Jantar Mantar, Parliament House, and surrounding locations, in response to plans for a “Chalo Sansad” demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been enforced throughout New Delhi district, banning gatherings of five or more people, marches, and demonstrations without prior approval. Officials have designated Jantar Mantar as the sole authorized site for protests, emphasizing that any violations could lead to legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Multi-layered barricades, additional personnel including paramilitary forces, and enhanced surveillance are in place to maintain order.
The march is tied to ongoing demands for accountability in the education system, particularly following alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. CJP supporters, led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, have called for the resignation of the Union Education Minister and greater transparency in examinations. Large crowds have already gathered at Jantar Mantar, with participants arriving from various parts of the country, signaling widespread public concern over repeated examination failures.
At the center of the protests is climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is continuing his indefinite hunger strike now in its fourth week. Currently under medical supervision at Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk’s condition is described as stable yet vulnerable after more than three weeks without solid food. A joint team of doctors from AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital is monitoring him around the clock. He has accepted sugar-free oral rehydration solution and potassium tablets but has declined intravenous fluids and other interventions.
Wangchuk has stated he will end his fast if the government takes responsibility for lapses in the education sector, including paper leaks, or if parliamentarians commit to addressing education accountability during the current parliamentary session. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has been actively involved, and the Delhi High Court recently addressed related petitions, upholding the decision to shift him to the hospital while noting he remains a free citizen not under detention. The court emphasized the importance of preserving life and rejected immediate shifts to private facilities.
