Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday questioned the Cockroach Janta Party over its protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, asking why the group remains silent on issues in other states.
Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the ongoing sit-ins and protests in the capital had caused losses worth thousands of crores to Delhi. She noted that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is not a new exercise and has been conducted multiple times by the Election Commission over the years, irrespective of which party was in power at the Centre or in the states. She asked why objections were being raised now when similar revisions had faced no such resistance earlier.
Gupta further questioned whether the group would oppose such an exercise if it were to form a government in states such as Tamil Nadu or Kerala. She asked whether the issue concerned the protesters only in places where they had failed to form a government.
Referring to the Cockroach Janta Party, the chief minister reiterated the claim that it functions as the Aam Aadmi Party’s “B-team.” She asked where the group goes when issues arise in other states and why it does not stage protests there. Citing a recent murder linked to drugs in Punjab, she questioned why the organisation had not protested in that state.
Her remarks came after Cockroach Janta Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to five-day judicial custody for breaching Jantar Mantar, which was de-notified as a protest site earlier this week.
Gupta also criticised the Congress, stating that the party was joining hands with people abroad who were jealous of India’s progress. She said the people of the country were satisfied with the development work being carried out under the present central leadership and that this progress was what troubled its critics.
