New Delhi : The Chief Justice of India termed the move a “calculated and deep-rooted” attack on the judiciary, saying the Supreme Court would not allow anyone to defame or question the institution’s integrity. Taking suo motu cognisance of the issue, the CJI said he had been receiving numerous calls and messages, including from High Court judges, expressing concern. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the court that senior members of the Bar were “very disturbed” by the inclusion of “judicial corruption” in school textbooks.
We as senior members of this institution are very disturbed at judicial corruption being part of the Class 8 books, said Sibal, to which the CJI replied, “I’m getting a lot of calls and messages about this, also from judges of the HCs. I will not allow anyone to defame and question the integrity of the judiciary, CJI Surya Kant added. Abhishek Singhvi argued that it appeared as though one institution was being singled out, with no mention of corruption among politicians, ministers or bureaucrats.
The selectivity my lord. The selectivity… It is there in other areas also but judicial corruption, called out Singhvi. In response, Justice Joymalya Bagchi said,”The book seems to go against the basic structure itself. Calling it a new flashpoint between the government and the judiciary, the CJI asserted that action would be taken regardless of how high the matter reached, and added that the court would not permit any attack on the judicial institution. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the court that the inclusion of “judicial corruption” in school textbooks is “very disturbing”.
We are deeply disturbed as the members of this institution to find that the children of Class 8 students are being taught about corruption in the judiciary. It is part of the NCERT. It is entirely scandalous. We have the copies of the book,” Sibal said in court. Responding to the concerns, the CJI asserted that he is aware of the matter and will take action. He added that the court would not permit any attack on the judicial institution.
